History of The Jonesboro Open
/Started in 2017, the Jonesboro Open has been a consistent stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour. Some players have come to dominate this event. While the sport has grown even since 2017 to today we can expect a lot out of this event as players enter the middle stretch of the season. Here is the history of the Jonesboro Open.
In 2017 the Jonesboro entered the scene as a B tier event. The tournament takes place in Jonesboro, Arkansas in the United States and has traditionally taken place in April. The Tournament was directed by Bradley Pietz. There were 66 total players in attendance with 54 players in the MPO division and 12 in the FPO division.
In this first year the total prize purse was $23,210. The first ever Jonesboro MPO winner was Ricky Wysocki who started out hot with a 1073 rated round. He would take home $2,500 for the event.
The first ever FPO winner for the Jonesboro open was Paige Pierce who shot a 987 rated round in the first round of play and took home $1,350.
The tournament in it’s second year would grow to an A tier event and nearly double in size of players with 119 total players registered across MPO and FPO divisions. The winners of the second year would be a repeat in both the MPO and FPO divisions despite the larger field.
In 2019, the field grew to 150 players across both MPO and FPO divisions and while Paige took down the event defending her title for the 3rd year in a row, a new MPO champion would be named. Paul McBeth took home the title with a 3 stroke lead over the second place finisher Garrett Gurthie.
In 2020, the tournament was moved out of the regular scheduled April window and into October due to the world climate and the outbreak of Covid-19. The event would also see a new title sponsor with Play it Again Sports. Understandably with the events of the time and the movement of the date of the event, there were substantially less players in attendance with 112. Paige Pierce would defend her title yet again making her the 4 time Jonesboro Open FPO champion after shooting 33 down this was a whole 13 strokes better then Catrina Allen who took second at the event.
On the MPO side in 2020 Calvin Heimburg took the title outshooting Paul Mcbeth, the defending Jonesboro champion by just 1 stroke.
2021 would see the event return to it’s normal place on the calendar. It would also see Ricky Wysocki reclaim his the top spot at the Jonesboro open shooting a 35 down which was a 4 stroke lead over the second place finisher and previous winner of the event Calvin Heimburg.
The dominance of Paige Pierce would come to an end in 2021 at Jonesboro, Catrina Allen, who took second the previous year, took the title by 8 strokes over Paige who came in second place.
In 2022 the tournament total prize purse increased $72,175, a large jump from the first year the event was held with $23,210.
Calvin Heimburg took back the win for his second Jonesboro title after fending off Paul McBeth with a late round surge. The event would end in a playoff with Paul throwing short off the tee leaving an opening for Calvin.
On the FPO side it was not as close, Kristin Tattar takes the win after a 10 stroke lead over the nearest competitor with a total of 24 down for the event.
The tournament will continue it’s Pro Tour run in 2023 as well. Be sure to check back here for details on the results.
