History of The Music City Open Disc Golf Tournament
/The Music City Open has been around for several years, more recently it has been a stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour both as a silver series and now as an Elite series event. Here is the History of the Music City Open.
Started in 2010, the Music City Open was a B tier event and run by tournament director Hunter Hakanson. an impressive 165 players attended the inaugral event with a total prize purse of $5,625. The first MPO winner of the Music City Open was Ken Climo, and the first FPO winner was Amanda Duncan. The tournament would continue on in 2011, 2012 though being held slightly earlier in the calendar year.
Then in 2013, the event was raised to an A tier event and was run by a new tournament director Andy Garrett. Andy was listed as the assistant tournament director the year prior. This year there were only 50 players attending, with Matt Orum taking the Music City Open title for MPO, and Paige Pierce taking the title for FPO.
The Music City Open in 2014 was downgraded back to a B tier event, and received it’s 3rd tournament director, Michael McDaniel. This B tier saw a large amount of players attend again at 156 players. The event would continue in 2015 and 2016 as a B tier event.
In 2017 the Music City Open returns to an A tier event status and receives it’s 4th tournament director, Alan Posey. with 233 players attending.
2018 brought in the 5th tournament director Will Mckaski. Will would direct the tournament in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
In 2020 The Music City Open was slated to be a National Tour event, and although the event was still held, the National Tour was cancelled. The tournament stop did become a National Tour stop however in the 2021 season in fact the Music City Open was the National Tour Finale and the very last national tour event to run before the tour was absorbed by the Disc Golf Pro Tour. With a booming total pro purse of $76,505.
The story was not over for the Music City Open, in 2022 the event stayed on the pro circuit as a silver series event with the Disc Golf Pro Tour. The tournament also was now run by it’s 6th tournament director Zachary Hoy.
The Music City Open was promoted to an elite series stop in 2023. The trophy for this event was a custom made Gibson guitar.
